Why RAM Is Plastered On These Tailgates And A Plea For Dodge To Get It's Own Identity

This is the tackiest shit anyone has done in years. I know it’s ugly, you know it looks like crap, and RAM certainly knows this is some stank ass shit and I don’t mean that in the “urban culture” kind of way.

Why did RAM ruin the back ends of their trucks? In order to down play the shock of the front ends loosing over 20 years of well branded design language.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

So don’t let the tailgates misguide your animosity. It’s the front end we should be railing against. Dodge doesn’t have a brand identity of it’s own. Dodge had a red Pentastar it stole from Chrysler, then it took the Ram logo, then Dodge tried to make the crosshairs into the brand, now they just have two generic racing stripes. Dodge doesn’t have a brand identity, period!

Kinja'd!!!

Back when they shared the “Pentastar” with Chrysler (but red because sporty!)

Kinja'd!!!

Then they made bank on the Dodge Ram after the ‘94 redesign

Kinja'd!!!

Couldn’t use the Ram emblem anymore after spinning off the RAM brand...still had the crosshair grill though!

I know what you’re about to say. “What about burnouts? Muscle cars? HEMIs? AMERICA?!” Bullshit!! What you’re describing is the SRT subbrand. Heck even Dodge’s current halo cars don’t use the crosshair grill. The front ends sample the Viper, which just barely uses the Dodge’s own design cue.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

If you’re curious as to why the spinoff of the SRT brand failed, it’s because Dodge is too big to fail. All of Dodge’s marketing hinges on SRT’s presence. When Dodge doesn’t want to use SRT, they still need to push the 5.7L HEMI engine which we all know isn’t long for this world due to economy, power, and the fact that the 6.4L will likely replace it in R/T models.

Also, with Chrysler moving into the mainstream, can Dodge really be the sporty brand without using SRT power? Perhaps if Dodges performed like American Mazdas, definitely! But is that going to happen with the Chrysler brand only having three models, the rollout of Alfa Romeo, Maserati doing...something, and Ferrari being moved from a luxury car brand to a purveyor of luxury “goods?” Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Dodge might as well have SRT hyphenated to the brand name like a hispanic american marriage. While we are at it, Chrysler Group should just rename itself Jeep Group since it’s the only thing making money. FIAT Jeep makes a lot more sense to me. Did you know Jeep is currently the 6th best selling brand in the US? No cars, no “coupes,” and no three-row crossovers. Plus they still have the Compass and Patriot!

All I know is that I’m not going to sit here quietly and let Dodge take another distinct design from the Ram brand. The trucks don’t need to find a new identity, they have had one for over 20 years. Dodge needs to be the one looking for a new grill design and an identity outside of SRT. Make Dodge pull it’s own weight for change!

Bring back the ‘star of David’ emblem for Dodge and bring Ram back to Dodge.

I kind of like it on the red one. Block letter are cool. Not as cool as just the Ram’s head, but still, cool.

On the road it’s a bit much. The truck is big, wide, and lifted, so that emblem is bigger than most car windshields. I also fight between RAM and GMC for best looking trucks, and I think GMC wins when it comes to font size.

That might be reaching too far into ages past... and might be a bit too politically and ethnically divisive for a company that wants to sell to anyone and everyone.

I support Israel and the jewish people, but there are plenty of people who don’t, and some few who would take it as a point of contention, and perhaps even retaliation.

Not to mention the historical context of the Star of David being used as a mark of condemnation of jewish people during the holocaust.

It is like a celebrity talking about politics... whether they know what they are talking about or not, they alienate half their audience for something that they probably didn’t need to say anyway, because the public is fickle and doesn’t know how to react to things in a civilized and contextually-aware manner.

But those giant RAM letters and grilles are damn ridiculous on their face. They were fine before. If the tailgate logo has to be that big... at least body-color would make it look less blatant and desperate for marketing attention.

Well, many pickups of old had the brand name molded into the tailgate, so that’s nothing new.

As for the brand on the grille...I’d say Ford is to blame for that...

...and Toyota...

In fact, the RAM Rebel’s grille style looks almost directly inspired by the TRD Pro line.

I say move Ram into the Jeep brand (Jeep Ram 1500 makes sense, right?) Just move the Dodges under the Chrysler banner. Chrysler 100 (Dart), 200, 300, Chrysler Journey, Chrysler Aspen (Durango), and Grand T&C minivan. Boom, American brands all sorted out. Bring in the Alfas!

Maybe on both. Spinning off trucks from what had always been Chrysler’s “and trucks” division - some 80+ years - always seemed a little stupid to me. Dodge have some other emblems they never settled on as well as the DB six-pointed star, and any of them would also work. Like this one on Chargers:

Kinja'd!!!

And this one on all kinds of models in the 40s-50s, though it probably can’t be revived due to OMG COMPLEX:

Kinja'd!!!

Then again, Ford’s thunderbolt logo is badass, and there’s no chance of if coming back either.

The Rebel I don’t mind as much. But you have to remember the size of all those trucks is not the same as the current 1500s. I like the “pressed” look like on the Tundra and classic trucks. The front is fine. It’s the fact that I had to sit behind a chromed out Limited with the sun reflecting off the RAM badge, burning the brand into my corneas with letters larger than my windshield. That is why I’m pissed off about this.

The hard-to-contextualize nature of a mogen David or anything appearing to be one was one reason I mentioned other logos. This one in particular (the triangle in triangle in circle) would be easy for them to work with, particularly since it hails from the muscle car glory days they’re trying to reach for lately:

In Chrome on a tailgate that’s larger than your windshield? Hard pass!

Honest to the Bruce Almighty I think Dodge was supposed to die. Think about it.

Fiat: small cheap cars

Chrysler: larger cars and minivans

Jeep: SUVs

RAM: Trucks

SRT: sports cars

Alfa: luxury sports cars

Why have Dodge at all? I think the answer was Plymouth died with a wimper but Pontiac left the auto masses angry. I think the Eye-talians finally decided not to piss off middle America. I really do.

Why not just bring back the Fratzog? It’s still fairly contemporary looking, and is something that’s uniquely associated with Dodge.

They have been flashing the old Dodge Brothers logo on some of their commercials lately, but I suspect that it’s too fussy and old-fashioned looking to be put back into regular use. It would be one thing if they had just never stopped using it.

FCA US has already said that they want to move Chrysler downmarket into the entry/mid-price field, which is where Dodge has always been - particularly after the demise of Plymouth. Add to that the spinning of the truck line off as a separate brand and their desire to grow Fiat into a bigger, more mainstream brand in the US, rather than a pigeon holed MINI competitor with a few niche models, and it does get hard to see where Dodge was supposed to fit into the whole mix.

It seems as though they are trying to turn it into more of a sports/performance brand now. It didn’t really work for Pontiac or MG, but maybe Dodge can pull it off this time.
